After School Changes Coming to West Chester

After School Changes Coming to West Chester

MidPointe Library West Chester has long served the community as a resource after school for many Lakota families. Over the years, the Library has made accommodations to welcome students, including building additional study spaces, revitalizing the teen area of the building, contracting with the West Chester Police Department to provide officers to assist in managing crowds, growing age-appropriate events and partnering with EDGE Teen Center to offer enriching programming in the Library Community Room every day after school.

Despite these changes, the crowds after school thus far this school year are proving to be much larger than past years. As a result, to safely manage traffic and be mindful of Library building and staff capacity, MidPointe Library System, Lakota Local Schools, EDGE Teen Center and West Chester Township are partnering to implement several new processes at the MidPointe Library West Chester on school days.

Effective Monday, November 27, new procedures will be in place to assist in crowd management afternoons on school days.  After school, MidPointe will have a “Pass or Parent” requirement for students to enter the building.

  • Study Passes/Access Roster – For entry into the library for Lakota West students, a daily sign-up roster will be made available at the beginning of each school day in the main office from 7:45 am until 8:05 am. The quantity of roster spots/passes will be limited, and they will be claimed on a first-come, first-served basis. Students on the access/study passes roster will only be allowed entry into the main portion of the Library after school (not EDGE Teen Center events).
  • EDGE Teen Center Access – The EDGE@West presented by MidPointe program and those signed up for the community service opportunities will not need a special pass to enter the community rooms for the EDGE program. Their names will be on a roster that will be checked at the door. Students not currently enrolled and wish to attend EDGE@WEST presented by MidPointe must first enroll. Parents may register students at https://edgeteencenter.com/west/enroll-west . EDGE@ WEST also has capacity restrictions per building code and will accept additional students on a first-come, first-serve basis until the maximum capacity is reached. Students enrolled with EDGE Teen Center will only be allowed entry into the Library’s Community Room after school (they cannot enter the main portion of the library).

Students without a pass/parent or those waiting for a ride will not be permitted into MidPointe Library building (including the lobby).  Instead, Lakota West High School main entrance hallway will remain open (after school until 4:00 pm) for students waiting for pick-up. This will allow students to stay out of the elements, prevent library parking lot congestion, and limit crossing of the busy West Chester Road.

Please make arrangements with your students to ensure they have either signed up for on the access/pass roster, registered and enrolled in the EDGE@WEST program or have transportation pick up plans in place following implementation of these new procedures beginning Monday, November 27th.
