MIDDLETOWN

Position:  Librarian, genealogy/history focus, full-time, regularly scheduled 40 hours/week

Description:  
As a librarian you would help customers of all ages in the selection and interpretation of materials. You’d help researchers with their local history work and work with our archives librarian. Provide excellent customer service, demonstrating a professional, courteous, and respectful attitude towards all patrons. Create, develop, schedule, and implement several weekly educational, cultural, or library-oriented programs for adults. Help customers with basic and complex reference questions at the public services desk and on the telephone. General desk responsibilities include giving computer assistance, give reading recommendations, issuing library cards, giving instruction on how to use the ILS, databases, the Internet, and library equipment. Represent the library at events and off-site venues. Other duties as requested or assigned.

Qualifications:  Bachelor’s degree in a job-related field is needed. An accredited Masters of Library Science degree (MLS), or being in the process of obtaining an MLS, is highly desired. Superior customer service skills are needed. Must have experience with genealogical/local history research and collections. Experience in developing and implementing creative and engaging programs for adults is needed. Must have excellent knowledge of literature. Must have prior experience using an automated library system and library database searching. Must have computer, communication, interpersonal, research, leadership, and problem solving skills. Must have a valid driver’s license, and be insurable. Must be able to hear, read, write, speak, and understand English effectively, as well as have sufficient dexterity, mobility, and visual acuity to meet job requirements. Movements such as bending, lifting, sitting, moving, crouching, and moving and lifting full book crates and other materials that weigh up to 75 pounds is required. Regular and predictable attendance is required.

Salary:  Starts at $16.36 with MLS, more depending on experience.
            Starts at $12.96 without MLS, more depending on experience.

Position: Library Specialist, Youth Services Department Part-time, regularly scheduled 24 hours/week

Description: 
As a library specialist in the youth services department, you would provide friendly, helpful information to customers of all ages in the selection and interpretation of materials. You’ll develop and present various weekly programs for teens, as well as assist the team with the summer reading program and events. Oversee the teen volunteers. Outreach to schools, community groups, and organizations to bring library services to them. Help customers with basic reference questions at the youth services desk and on the telephone. General desk responsibilities are also part of the job. Represent the library at events such as festivals, fairs, parades, and off-site programs and events. Other duties as requested or assigned.

Qualifications:
  High school diploma or equivalent is required. A college degree is highly desired. Must have a valid driver’s license, be insurable, and have reliable transportation for travel to off-site programs and events. The ability to present and deliver exciting, lively, and animated programs, and events is required. Must have prior experience developing and presenting a variety of successful teen programs. Must have excellent knowledge of teen and children’s literature. Must have prior experience using an automated library system and on-line database searching. Strong customer service and interpersonal skills are required as we are a customer oriented and team based library. Sound professional judgment, good research skills, the ability to multi-task, and excellent verbal and written skills are necessary. Must be able to hear, read, write, speak, and understand English effectively, as well as have sufficient dexterity, mobility, and visual acuity to meet job requirements. Movements such as bending, lifting, sitting, moving, crouching, and moving and lifting full book crates and other materials that weigh up to 75 pounds is required. Position:  Library Associate, Public Services, part-time

Description: 
Provide excellent customer service while helping patrons with their library needs and requests. Answer information and reference questions using print and electronic resources. Provide directional information, reading recommendations, assist with the check-out stations, and give instruction on how to use the online card catalog, the Internet, print station, and library databases. Use cash register and credit card machine software. Collect and clear overdue fines and lost materials costs. Explain library policies and procedures. Other duties as requested or assigned.

Qualifications:  Must have a high school diploma or equivalent. College degree highly desired. Must have excellent customer service, problem solving, computer, and communication skills. Must have excellent experience using Word, Excel, and the Internet. Knowledge of library databases highly desired. Will need to be able to give instruction on the online card catalog, the Internet, databases, e-readers, and library equipment. Cash register and credit card machine experience highly desired. The ability to work in a team based atmosphere is needed. Must be organized and efficient. Must be able to effectively hear, read, write, speak, and understand English, as well as have sufficient dexterity and visual acuity to meet the job requirements. Sitting, standing, bending, lifting, crouching, stooping, and other similar movements are required. The ability to move book carts that could weigh up to 75 pounds is needed. Must have regular and predictable attendance as required.

Hours:  20 hours per week, includes days, evenings, and weekends.

Position:  Library Associate, Maintenance, part-time, 20 hours per week.  

Description: Provide excellent customer service by ensuring that library buildings, grounds, and equipment are clean, safe, and ready for customer and staff use.  Travel to other branches, as needed. Routinely monitor, and when directed, perform preventative or repair work on library facilities, buildings, grounds, and related equipment. Perform janitorial and landscaping duties. May assist vendors and contractors regarding maintenance related matters. Other duties as requested or assigned.    

Qualifications: Must have high school diploma or equivalent. Must have valid driver’s license and be insurable on the library’s policy. Must have good working knowledge of power cleaning and polishing tools, cleaning solutions, snow removal equipment, minor repair equipment, and use in a safe, efficient, and effective manner. Must have good computer and math skills. Good verbal and written communication skills are needed. Must be able to follow direction and work within deadlines to complete projects and assignments. Must be able to work in areas that may contain dust or other possible allergens. Must be able to sit, stand, push, pull, bend, stoop, crouch, crawl, kneel, reach, climb, lift objects up to 75 pounds and move objects up to that weigh up to 150 pounds. Must have regular and predictable physical attendance as required.    

Salary: Starts at $9.60 per hour, more depending on experience.

Description:  Provide excellent customer service.  Shelve library materials in the proper location according to the Dewey Decimal system or alphabetically.  Maintain shelves by shifting materials.  Evaluate the condition of materials. Pull books from shelves for holds and discards. Check materials in using the automated sorting machine. Sort book drop materials. Pull holds and weed materials from lists.  Answer directional questions. Clerical duties and other duties as assigned.  

Qualifications:  Prior computer experience is necessary. Must be comfortable using library equipment such as computers and printers. Must be able to use conveyor belt machinery. Must be able to file by the Dewey Decimal System and alphabetically. Must have attention to detail, be accurate, organized, able to prioritize, multi-task, and have good time management skills. Must be able to work independently and with others.  Bending, lifting, and moving of full book crates, carts or bins weighing up to 75 pounds is required. Must be able to work in areas that may contain dust or other possible allergens. Must be able to hear, read, write, speak, and understand English effectively as well as have sufficient dexterity and visual acuity to meet the job requirements. Must have regular and predictable attendance.  

Hours:  Various schedules. Description:  Provide excellent customer service while helping patrons at the customer service desk. Desk responsibilities include helping with the check-out and check-in machines, issuing library cards, collecting overdue fines and lost material costs, helping with the reserve and hold materials, assisting customers with the copier and explaining policies and procedures to customers. Other duties include emptying the bookdrop, checking in materials, inspecting and sorting returned materials, and other duties as requested or assigned.  

Qualifications:  Must have high school diploma or equivalent. Must have excellent customer service, communication skills, and math skills. Experience using computers is needed, cash register and credit machine is needed. Must be able to multi-task, prioritize, and handle confidential information. Must be able to hear, read, write, speak, and understand English effectively. Must have visual acuity to distinguish letters, words, and numbers, and manual dexterity sufficient to operate library equipment. Standing, bending, lifting, sitting, crouching, pushing, and other similar movements is required.  Carrying full book crates, and moving fully loaded book carts that could weigh up to 75 pounds is required.
