Summer Lunch Program Available from Two MidPointe Locations

To most people, “summer” is synonymous with no school, fun in the sun and travel to interesting places.

However, for many students summer vacation can be a challenge, especially when it comes to getting proper nutrition. A daily lunch may not be available. That’s where government-funded “Summer Lunch” programs with partners like MidPointe Library enter the picture.

Once again MidPointe Library will host the long-running “Summer Lunch Program” that provides free, weekday lunches to babies and children of all ages. An afternoon snack has been added this year.

Lunches and snacks will be available at two sites:

MidPointe Library Middletown, 125 South Broad Street, Middletown
Dates: Monday through Friday, June 10-August 9
Time: Noon to 1 p.m.
Location: Douglas J. Bean Community Room
Snacks will be available in the Youth Department from 4 to 4:30 p.m.

The Edgewood Outreach Center, 405 Sycamore Road, Apartment 5, Trenton (new location).
Dates : Monday through Friday, June 3-August 9
Time: 1 to 2:30 p.m.
Snacks will be available from 4 to 4:30 p.m.
MidPointe’s Trenton branch will serve as host.

“This year we have a new sponsor, the United Methodist Church Food Ministry based in Kentucky,” said Ally Doliboa, Youth Programming Librarian at MidPointe’s Middletown location. “Their ability to provide a hot lunch daily will be extremely beneficial to our students. We’re also very pleased that the food ministry offers a snack option as well.”

For many years, the Summer Lunch Program has provided meals to students who rely on school breakfasts and lunches for their source of nutrition.  However, school children aren’t the only ones who benefit. According to Amy Young, formerly manager of MidPointe’s Trenton branch, now serving as manager at its West Chester location, some adults are also eligible.

“In addition to being open to ANY child up to age 18, Summer Lunch is available to adults through 21 years of age who are on an IEP (Individualized Education Program) or other plan offered through a school district,” she explained.

Proof of age or need will not be required in order to participate in the lunch program.

The dates for the Summer Lunch Program coincide with those of MidPointe’s popular Summer Reading Program for all ages. Lunch-goers are welcome to attend the free program in which participants read books for prizes and enjoy special guests.  Summer Reading will take place June 1 through July 31 at all MidPointe locations.
