New Ways to Learn About Local History

Here at MidPointe the buzzword is “History.” Not only do we enjoy learning about the past but we enjoy making history available to you! Here’s how:

  • The spacious, newly named Local History and Genealogy Gallery at our Middletown location. Located next to the long-established Ohio Room, the Gallery offers patrons a wealth of material which they can check out : books and magazines on the how-tos of genealogy, histories, biographies and memoirs of local interest, pictorial exhibits and more. A surefire way to locate the Gallery? A replica of the Aeronca model 7AC Champion plane, resplendent in yellow and red, is suspended from its ceiling, beckoning visitors while reminding them of the company’s long and storied history in Middletown. The replica was donated by the Friends of the Library in honor of longtime Friend, the late Len Kahny of Middletown.

  • Our new, 70-inch interactive local history touchscreen.  Mounted on the south wall of the Local History and Genealogy Gallery at Middletown, the touchscreen proves that history is just a fingertip away! Currently the screen displays a locally-produced timeline of African American history, photographic exhibits of historic Middletown and Monroe, and a “memory match” game involving local historic logos.

  • The African American History Timeline on our interactive screen features captivating facts, illustrations and photographs about African Americans from the 1400s to 2010 in the city of Middletown, the state of Ohio and the United States. The exhibit was originally created by the Middletown African American Heritage and Cultural Center and originally designed by local historian Sam Ashworth. It was made possible by a generous grant from the Middletown Community Foundation in cooperation with the Middletown Historical Society and will be available for viewing on our interactive screen until the end of March.

  • Other current touchscreen exhibits include “Welcome to Middletown” photographs from the 1940s through the 1960s and a “sneak peek” at the upcoming Marion G. Warner Photograph collection of Monroe history from the 1910s and 1920s. That exhibit is available courtesy of the Monroe Historical Society and will be fully accessible online this Spring. Another future exhibit, prompted by the return of our old friend, the Bookmobile, after a 30-year hiatus will recall Bookmobiles that served library patrons from the late 1930s to the late 1980s.

  • As always, the Ohio Room at our Middletown location provides in-house-use-only materials such as yearbooks, city directories, historic county atlases, and more for your research. However, historical materials on regular library shelves and in the Local History and Genealogy Gallery at Middletown are available for check-out.

Remembering the past, anticipating the future while serving you today, we are your MidPointe Library.
