Join the MidPointe Library System and the Historical Society of West Chester for the celebration of a local veteran, whose letters home during service time preserve a remarkable personal experience, as well as document an important time in history.

On Tuesday, May 17, 2016, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM, in the Community Room of the MidPointe Library West Chester, an Open House will be held to unveil the Virginia Shewalter Letters Collection. Mr. Lee Fisher will introduce the collection and provide the opening remarks. On display will be Virginia Shewalter's letters home, mementos from overseas, Women's Army Corps memorabilia and more. Refreshments will be provided.

"The collection offers a historically unique and under represented perspective of the Second World War and offers a rare glimpse into one woman's experience serving her country," says Adam Wanter, MidPointe Library System's Digital and Special Collections Archivist.

Virginia Shewalter was born on July 14, 1916 in Dayton, Ohio and graduated from Union Township High School at West Chester. She entered the Women's Army Corps in 1942 and served three years. During her military service, she was stationed in England and France and rose to the rank of Captain.

This collection is made possible through the generosity of the West Chester Historical Society, the W.E. Smith Family Charitable Trust and the Community Foundation of West Chester/Liberty. Digital images and transcripts of Virginia Shewalter's letters can be found at here. For more information regarding the Open House, please call (513)777-3131 or visit www.MidPointeLibrary.org.
