Monroe Elementary School 6th grade student Mara Bell been selected and invited to attend the National Invention Convention & Entrepreneurship Expo (NICEE) Jun 1-3 in Washington D.C!

Eighteen fifth and sixth grade students participated in a pilot Invention Convention preparation program which was a partnership of the Monroe Local School District’s Elementary School and the MidPointe Library. In addition, twelve mentors from the community donated their time to assist the inventors in completing the entrepreneur portion of the student journal, and eight community judges evaluated the student inventors at the first Monroe Invention Convention on April 6th.

Teachers Melissa Costello (gifted/enrichment) and Susan Cooper (STEAM) hosted the program at the school. From October to April, students from the High cog. group met during school hours, while the STEAM group of science gifted students met after school and worked diligently through the process of gathering problems and identifying one that they chose to solve with an original invention. Mara and her Pure Repel Invention were selected from less than 40 inventions (many were teams) throughout Ohio from the video she submitted upon Ohio Invention Convention registration. She and fellow student inventors Vanessa Wolf, Matt Melone (also state bound Finalists) and Micah Tarin (Semi-Finalist) will represent Monroe at the Ohio Invention Convention and Entrepreneurship Competition. Additional semi-finalists were Jade Arroyo, Kerrie Beattie, Alexis Fleming and the team of Brady Combs and Christian King. Alternate Delanie Reenan became a semi-finalist due to the unavailability of two inventors.

Mara is an exemplary student at Monroe Elementary, maintaining Honor Roll status with a 4.0 GPA all year and competing as a Spelling Bee winner this year and finalist for several years in a row.  In addition, she was the DARE essay contest winner and received the Art Award.  She serves her school community on both the Safety Patrol and Student Council.
