Sound and Vision, the Celluloid Society's 2013-2014 Film Series, will launch on September 29th at 1:30 PM with a screening of the 1968 film, "The Thomas Crown Affair," in the MidPointe Library Middletown Community Room. This feature is an ideal kick-off to the series, as it won an Academy Award for "Best Original Song" and highlights the series' theme of the importance of music in film. This classic movie is a cult favorite and stars Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway.

The series continues on October 27th with "The Birds," Alfred Hitchcock's 1963 horror film starring Tippi Hedren and featuring the work of sound designer Bernard Herrmann. The screening on November 24th will be Woody Allen's "Radio Days," featuring music by Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington. "The Hudsucker Proxy" will be shown on January 26. This Coen Brothers' film includes a score by Carter Burwell that features the music of Bizet, Chopin, Khachaturian, Tchaikovsky and Duke Ellington. The 1941 melodrama "Penny Serenade," featuring Cary Grant and Irene Dunn, will be shown on February 23rd. The film's score by W. Franke Harling features songs such as "You Were Meant for Me," "My Blue Heaven," "These Foolish Things (Remind Me of You)" and "Just a Memory." The Francis Ford Coppola directed "The Conversation" will be screened on March 23. The film stars Gene Hackman, John Cazale, Harrison Ford, Cindy Williams, Frederic Forrest and Robert Duvall and includes a score by David Shire. The series concludes on April 27th with "Singing in the Rain." Featuring songs such as "Make 'em Laugh," "All I Do is Dream of You," "You Were Meant For Me" and "Singin' in the Rain," this classic stars Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor, Debbie Reynolds and Jean Hagen.

Vince Risner, MidPointe Library Associate and coordinator of the series says that he enjoys selecting movies that not many people have seen and has received positive feedback from even the most controversial films. "People like to be challenged," he states.

Risner, a MidPointe Library Middletown Library Associate and Founder of the Celluloid Society, is no stranger to the magic of the silver screen. Before launching the Celluloid Society in 2006, he studied fashion and costume design in New York and Paris and designed costumes for stage, film and television, both locally and in Los Angeles.

All screenings start at 1:30 PM and are held in the Community Room of the MidPointe Library Middletown. Patrons must be 18 years or older to attend. Admission is free. For more information about the film series, please call the MidPointe Library Middletown at (513)424-125.
