100 years in the making, MidPointe Library System is proud to announce the launch of the Armco Ambulance Corps Collection. This new digital collection encompasses over 240 items, primarily correspondence, related to the Armco and the Armco Ambulance Corps during World War I. The Armco Ambulance Corps formed during the summer of 1917, shortly after the United States officially entered World War I.

The American Rolling Mill Company (Armco) and its employees were eager to aid the war effort. To do so, it was decided that a group of volunteers, selected from the ranks of Armco employees, would head to France and join the American Red Cross Norton-Harjes Ambulance Corps. This group would represent the “Armco Spirit” and would be fully funded and outfitted by the company. The group would leave New York City for France on August 8, 1917. Shortly after arriving, the Armco Men would be absorbed into the American Expeditionary Forces but remain together. They would primarily serve in Ambulance Service Section 646 and partake in many engagements.  The men would serve with distinction, receiving numerous honors and awards, both individually and as a unit.

This collection presents the firsthand accounts of the Armco Ambulance Corps members as they served as well as the account of George M. Verity, president of Armco.

Click here to view the digitized collection and to read for yourself the journey of the Armco Ambulance Corps.

For more information about the Armco Ambulance Corps, Armco, and World War I check out MidPointe Library System’s two exhibits:
Middletown and the Great War, MidPointe Library Middletown – On display now
The Armco Spirit, MidPointe Library West Chester – On display August 4

This project was a collaborative effort between the MidPointe Library System, the Middletown Historical Society, and the Ohio History Connection.  It is through the Middletown Historical Society’s generosity and dedication to preserving local history that we are able to make this digital collection available.
